Explore 3.17 Miles of Publicly Accessible Trails

Save Mount Diablo is thrilled to announce the opening of 3.17 miles of publicly accessible trails through the upper portion of Curry Canyon Ranch. These trails connect directly to Knobcone Point Road, further expanding access to Mount Diablo’s southeastern wilderness.

Two of these new trails officially opened to the public on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

Expanding Access: More Than Seven Miles of New Trails

In the past three years, Save Mount Diablo has added more than seven miles of trails for public use:

In 2023, we unveiled a trail connection through Mount Diablo’s Knobcone Point area, linking Balancing Rock to Riggs Canyon. This marked the first legal public access to this region in nearly a century!

Enhancing Trail Safety and Experience

Our stewardship volunteers and staff have worked diligently to make these trails safe and enjoyable:

  • Installed new gates and informational signage
  • Removed old gates and dead trees to reduce fire risks
  • Pruned tree branches and shrubs for better visibility

Visitors are reminded to help protect the area’s unique habitat by cleaning bike tires and hiking boots to prevent the spread of the Phytophthora pathogen, which threatens native plants.

More Than a Decade in the Making

This project stems from Save Mount Diablo’s acquisition of the 1,080-acre Curry Canyon Ranch in 2013. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to create opportunities for the public to explore this highly biodiverse area, which includes knobcone pine forests, rocky cliffs, and sweeping views of Mount Diablo’s peaks and the Sacramento Valley.

Opening these trails not only enhances public access but also assists Mount Diablo State Park staff in managing the surrounding areas, such as Riggs Canyon.
