Volunteer of the Month | Nancy Huen

Nancy Huen

Meet Nancy

How long have you lived in the Bay Area?

Since 1987, so 36 years!

How did you learn about Save Mount Diablo?

Through NCL (National Charity League).

When did you start volunteering with us, and why did you get involved?

I started in 2015 through National Charity League, which gave us the opportunity to find and work with charities that resonated with us.

My daughter and I found Save Mount Diablo on that list of charities and loved the idea of supporting an organization that believes in land conservation.

So, we signed up to work Moonlight on the Mountain and were amazed at how this event took place and highlighted the natural beauty of the mountain and kept coming back year after year.

What do you enjoy about the volunteer work you do?

Overall I love supporting the charities that have similar beliefs as I do such as land conservation, food insecurity, the arts, animals, and so much more. I think we should all be mindful of our surroundings and communities and give back however we can.

What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

The hard work that the entire Save Mount Diablo group does with setting up Moonlight on the Mountain is always challenging, especially as I continue to get more involved.

It is always rewarding to see the coordination of all the different charity groups and individuals that come together to create such a beautiful event that raises so much for a cause that I believe in.

Is there a memorable experience you’ve had as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer? If so, we’d love to hear it!

One year at Moonlight on the Mountain, one of the speakers was a descendent of one of the original ranch families and it was inspiring to hear about her family’s story and the history of the mountain.

How do you spend your time beyond your volunteer work with us?

I still work as a biomedical lab scientist, and I continue to work at various other charities that support land conservation, the arts, and teaching young boys and girls to be strong and independent men and women.

After work and volunteering, I enjoy my free time going to the theater, spending time outdoors with my pug Willow, dancing, and trying new foods and recipes.
