Meet Sandy

How long have you lived in the Bay Area?

All my life.

How did you learn about Save Mount Diablo?

When we first moved to Walnut Creek in 1991, we heard about Save Mount Diablo and started to volunteer and attend events.

When did you start volunteering with us, and why did you get involved?

I have volunteered here and there for the past 30 years but more steadily starting in July of this year after I retired. I wanted to stay engaged after leaving the workplace and help a cause I totally believe in.

Which Save Mount Diablo programs are you involved in?

In July I jumped in by focusing on the Moonlight on the Mountain event, entering donation items into the software system, taking photos of the items, picking up items from donors, making follow-up calls, organizing the items for transport to the event, and then helping with set up on-site the day of the event.

Since the event ended, I have helped with mailing preparation and any other office work that needs to be done.

What do you enjoy about the volunteer work you do?

It is rewarding to get in the trenches and help with a piece of an extremely complex event like Moonlight and then see it come to fruition and know that I helped Save Mount Diablo achieve its goal.

What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

Moonlight on the Mountain, due to the complexity, many moving pieces, etc.

Is there a memorable experience you’ve had as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

I’d have to say it would be helping with setting up the day of the Moonlight event to see everything fall into place and then to find out everything went smoothly.

How do you spend your time beyond your volunteer work with us?

After retiring from Clif Bar after 17 years, I am finally able to spend some time trying new things like learning to play the piano and learning how to play pickleball. I am also able to do more hiking in our beautiful parks and 0pen space areas. I also enjoy cooking and trying new recipes for family and friends.
