Volunteer of the Month | Bruce Erickson

Bruce Erickson

Meet Bruce

How long have you lived in the Bay Area?

About 40 years.

How did you learn about Save Mount Diablo?

While working for California State Parks on Mount Diablo, I quickly realized what a great organization Save Mount Diablo was and got to know many of the members over the 10+ years I worked in the park.

I was involved with Save Mount Diablo projects like rebuilding the Beacon, Mount Diablo Challenges, and the many dinners on the summit deck.

When did you start volunteering with us, and why did you get involved?

As soon as I left my employment with California State Parks, Ted Clement reached out to me about becoming a volunteer.

I am passionate about the same things Save Mount Diablo does, and I get to continue doing what I was doing on Mount Diablo for years, convincing people of the importance of Nature in their lives.

Which Save Mount Diablo programs are you involved in?

I am mainly involved with events and work closely with Brit, Shannon, and Karen. I help with the prep work including name tags for attendees and greet people when they arrive.

What do you enjoy about the volunteer work you do?

I get to be an ambassador for Save Mount Diablo with our shared goals for more open space and public land. I love the people at Save Mount Diablo and enjoy working with them, and I believe they also appreciate me.

What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

The one we just did: “Moonlight on the Mountain.” There was a lot of prep work involved in making this a successful event.

Is there a memorable experience you’ve had as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

I am proud every time I get to attend an event and represent Save Mount Diablo as an ambassador. Tabling at the Diablo Trails Challenge was the most fun because I knew so many of the runners.

How do you spend your time beyond your volunteer work with us?

I help my wife with gardening, walk and exercise, and deliver food with DoorDash. Before I started volunteering, I worked for California State Parks at the Summit Visitor Center on Mount Diablo for over 10 years.

Before that I worked in the fire service industry for 20 years selling fire and rescue equipment and training on the “Jaws of Life.” Then I spent another 10+ years in the credit union and banking industry doing sales and training.

Join us to save the remaining natural lands of Mount Diablo!
