Meet Janet
How long have you lived in the Bay Area?
California was as far away as I could imagine, so in 1968 I drove to the Bay Area to escape my Midwestern life. Over 50 years ago, and not a day of regret!
How did you hear about Save Mount Diablo, and when did you start volunteering with us?
Volunteering has always enriched my life and introduced me to so many wonderful projects and people.
My first two volunteer jobs here in California were as an editor with the Berkeley radio station KPFA and a teacher with Frank Laurbach’s Each One Teach One reading program. In 1999, I got involved with Save Mount Diablo through Charla Gabert, who was my department manager at work.
Charla taught me all she knew about hanging art for Moonlight on the Mountain, and then she graduated to other duties for Save Mount Diablo, leaving me to carry on happily with the art walls.
Which Save Mount Diablo programs are you involved in, and what do you enjoy about the volunteer work you do?
My 24 years with Moonlight have been incredible. Displaying and protecting fabulous art. Enjoying the gorgeous setting at China Wall. Listening to the speeches of tributes and triumphs.
And working with so many dedicated, talented folks who regularly make a positive contribution to our environment, our society, and our future.
