The Mountain Star Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose contributions have been significant in helping Save Mount Diablo achieve its mission “to forever preserve the remaining natural lands on and around Mount Diablo, and to connect Mount Diablo to the rest of the Diablo Range.”
Criteria for nomination include efforts that support the preservation of Mount Diablo and the Diablo Range while enhancing the quality of life in the surrounding communities.
These include, but are not limited to, leadership, restoration, stewardship, education, legislative, research, and interpretive activities.
This Year’s Winners
Joan Hamilton 2025
Joan Hamilton has been supporting Save Mount Diablo and other local environmental organizations’ work with her videos and audible guides for more than a decade.
Joan is a talented writer, producer, narrator, and editor. She spends countless hours in the field collecting information and using to create guides and videos.
Her hard work and passion for conservation have helped us make the case for a major capital campaign and inspired conservationists throughout the Mount Diablo region.

Protect San Benito 2025
For more than a decade, Protect San Benito has been the most important grassroots activist conservation organization in San Benito County (and sometimes Monterey).
San Benito County is the biggest and one of the most important parts of the Diablo Range and has been one of the most threatened.
In November 2024, with our support, Protect San Benito succeeded in passing Measure A, a county-wide initiative they qualified called “Empower Voters to Make Land Use Decisions,” despite massive deceptive opposition by developers.
