The Mountain Star Award recognizes individuals and organizations whose contributions have been significant in helping Save Mount Diablo achieve its mission “to forever preserve the remaining natural lands on and around Mount Diablo, and to connect Mount Diablo to the rest of the Diablo Range.”

Criteria for nomination include efforts that support the preservation of Mount Diablo and the Diablo Range while enhancing the quality of life in the surrounding communities.

These include, but are not limited to, leadership, restoration, stewardship, education, legislative, research, and interpretive activities.

This Year’s Winners

Doug McConnell 2024

Doug McConnell is a well-known television journalist who has devoted his illustrious career to showcasing the Bay Area’s splendid natural resources, including Mount Diablo and the Diablo Range, through his television programs. His work has helped educate the public about the irreplaceable value of protected natural land for plants, wildlife, and people, and he has inspired generations of viewers to appreciate the gifts of nature.

Laura Hoffmeister 2024

Laura Hoffmeister is a lifelong Concord resident.  She was first elected to the Concord City Council in 1997 and re-elected in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.  She has served several terms as Concord Mayor and Vice Mayor, as well.

 Laura Nakamura 2024

Laura Nakamura was elected to the Concord City Council in November 2022. She was raised in Pleasant Hill and settled in Concord, where she has lived since 1988.

Carlyn Obringer 2024

Carlyn Obringer was first elected to the Concord City Council in November 2016, and was re-elected in 2020. She served as Vice Mayor in 2018 and as Mayor in 2019.

These three Concord Councilmembers, Laura Hoffmeister, Laura Nakamura, and Carlyn Obringer, have shown dedication to maximizing the potential community benefit of the Concord Naval Weapons Station reuse project through additional city parks, protection and enhancement for Mount Diablo creek, off-site mitigation, and innovative and sustainable urban design.

Their united action to support the selection of a Master Developer and further the progress of this significant project demonstrated commitment to conservation priorities for the land on and around Mount Diablo.
