WALNUT CREEK, CA–Save Mount Diablo’s 50th anniversary is on December 7, 2021. We will be celebrating this very special 
anniversary from December 7, 2021 to December 7, 2022, with memorable events and activities throughout the year.
We’ll offer 50th anniversary hikes and outings, and we’ll invite our communities to a fabulous 50th anniversary celebration in September of 2022.
Our 50th anniversary logo is based on one of Save Mount Diablo’s earliest artistic renderings from the early 1970s; it captures the spirit of the time, and honors the past while inspiring the future.
Humble Beginnings, Ambitious Goals
When Save Mount Diablo was formed on December 7, 1971, the mountain was home to just one 6,788-acre park. Today, there are more than 50 parks and preserves around the mountain north of Altamont Pass, totaling over 120,000 conserved acres.
Because of Save Mount Diablo and partner organizations, Mount Diablo and its foothills are one of the Bay Area’s most significant assemblages of natural lands and wildlife habitats. However, when people look toward Mount Diablo, few realize that the beautiful vistas they see are not fully preserved.
Thousands of acres of natural land on and surrounding the mountain are in private ownership and are threatened by development or other land uses. Protecting these threatened natural lands that help connect Mount Diablo to its sustaining Diablo Range are especially important in this time of the climate crisis and mass species extinction.
50th Anniversary Oral History
For our 50th anniversary, we commissioned a very special oral history with UC Berkeley’s Oral History Center of The Bancroft Library.
Because Save Mount Diablo’s many achievements over the past 50 years are the result of teamwork, the oral history includes interviews with a variety of people, including current leaders, long-serving Board and staff members, some of our longest-term and most significant supporters, and a few of our important public agency partners.
This 50th anniversary oral history will be completed in 2022, and we look forward to sharing the results with all Save Mount Diablo supporters who have made our land conservation work possible over the last 50 years.
Save Mount Diablo’s mission is to preserve Mount Diablo’s peaks, surrounding foothills, watersheds, and connection to the Diablo Range through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain’s natural beauty, biological diversity, and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance our area’s quality of life; and provide educational and recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources. The organization is currently involved with its important year-end appeal to raise critical resources for its time-sensitive land conservation mission.
