State parks standstill: Why California hasn’t opened a new state park in 10 years

In 2013, Save Mount Diablo, an environmental group, purchased Curry Canyon
Ranch, a scenic, 1,080-acre property that borders Mount Diablo State Park
on three sides, for $7.2 million, intending to sell it to the state parks
department at or below cost. State parks officials say now they can’t
afford to buy it, however, leaving the public without access. (Photo: Scott
