Who We Are

Save Mount Diablo is a nationally accredited land trust and conservation organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Save Mount Diablo has been preserving lands on and around Mount Diablo and educating the public to the mountain’s natural values since 1971.

We are biologists, conservationists, hikers, bikers, equestrians, bird watchers, and people who just love to look at the mountain.

Save Mount Diablo is a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization (tax ID 94-2681735).

Our Mission

Save Mount Diablo’s mission is to preserve Mount Diablo’s peaks, surrounding foothills, and watersheds; and its sustaining Diablo Range, through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain’s natural beauty, biological diversity, and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance our area’s quality of life; and provide educational and recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources.

Why We Care

This is our home.

Preserving natural land forever means safeguarding our quality of life, including our air, water, and views. Thousands of open space acres on and around Mount Diablo are privately owned and still threatened by development. In this time of the climate crisis, we also need to make sure Mount Diablo remains connected to its 200-mile Diablo Range, of which only 25 percent has been protected. At risk are wildlife corridors, ecosystems, and recreational opportunities.

My Dream

“My dream is that the whole of Mount Diablo, including its foothills, will remain open space . . . that the visual and natural integrity will be sustained.”

Dr. Mary L. Bowerman

The Future

We envision a permanently protected natural corridor across the 12 counties of the Diablo Range, with the peaks of Mount Diablo connected to the rest of the Diablo Range, a critically important biodiversity refuge.

We endeavor to keep free from development the Mount Diablo core area and the wildlife corridor that links it to the rest of the Diablo Range, and to preserve specific areas that have major wildlife, recreational, scenic, and scientific values. Protecting land in a strategic corridor approach is an essential tool in addressing the climate crisis.

We are working to secure large portions of this habitat to be preserved as park lands, and our vision also includes private lands conserved by perpetual conservation easements.

Save Mount Diablo Is a Nationally Accredited Land Trust

In 2016, Save Mount Diablo achieved national accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission—a mark of honor in land conservation. Accreditation demonstrates that a land trust has successfully implemented Land Trust Standards and Practices. The accreditation seal offers the assurance that a land trust can keep the promise of perpetuity and that it is worthy of the public trust. So, accreditation strengthens both individual land trusts and America’s land conservation movement. The Land Trust Accreditation Commission awarded accreditation, signifying its confidence that Save Mount Diablo lands will be protected forever.
