Growing Climate Resilience across the Mount Diablo Region
Healthy landscapes are one of the most effective natural solutions to climate change.
Through Save Mount Diablo’s 10,000 Plants and Trees initiative, we are restoring native habitats, improving biodiversity, capturing carbon, and building climate resilience across thousands of acres of protected land.
As of May 2026, more than 5,146 native trees and plants have been planted and protected, marking significant progress toward our goal of establishing and safeguarding 10,000 native trees and plants over a 10-year period.
Why This Work Matters
Scientific research increasingly points to land conservation and ecological restoration as essential strategies for addressing climate change.
Native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers help capture and store carbon; improve soil health; reduce erosion; support pollinators; and strengthen ecosystems against drought, wildfire, and extreme weather.
By restoring native plant communities throughout the Mount Diablo region, Save Mount Diablo is helping create healthier, more resilient landscapes that benefit both wildlife and people.

Powered by Community
The success of this 10,000 Plants and Trees initiative is made possible by dedicated volunteers, schools, community groups, corporate teams, and conservation partners who contribute thousands of hours of stewardship each year.
Through Save Mount Diablo’s Education Program, students gain hands-on experience in habitat restoration. Young people participating in field trips have the opportunity to plant native species, protect young trees, and see firsthand how restoration efforts contribute to healthier landscapes and wildlife habitat.
Volunteers of all ages participate in planting, watering, weeding, invasive species removal, habitat monitoring, and long-term maintenance through our Diablo Restoration Team (DiRT) workdays and special restoration events.
These hands-on opportunities allow participants to make a tangible difference while building a stronger connection to the landscapes they help restore.
A Strategic Investment in the Future
Our 10,000 Trees and Native Plants Project is more than a planting program. It is a long-term investment in the health of our region.
Our restoration efforts focus on
- Planting native trees, shrubs, grasses, and pollinator habitats
- Protecting naturally occurring seedlings and young trees
- Removing invasive species that threaten ecosystem health
- Restoring degraded habitats and watersheds
- Increasing habitat connectivity for native wildlife
- Enhancing climate resilience across protected landscapes
Project sites include conservation properties such as Curry Canyon Ranch, Mangini Ranch Educational Preserve, and Marsh Creek, where restoration efforts are creating lasting environmental benefits while providing important habitats for species such as the monarch butterfly.

Partnership Opportunities
Achieving our 10,000-tree-and-plant goal requires collaboration. We invite corporations, foundations, community organizations, and individual donors to join us in creating a lasting conservation legacy.
Partners can support the initiative through
- Financial sponsorships
- Employee volunteer days
- Matching gift programs
- Multi-year restoration investments
- In-kind support and resources
Partnerships provide meaningful opportunities to demonstrate environmental leadership while directly contributing to measurable climate and conservation outcomes.
