Tarantula Hike for Adults

September 10 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free
All Discover Diablo hikes are subject to, and will honor, all applicable COVID-19–related restrictions in place for our area.

A scientist exploring California in the 1860s described Mount Diablo’s tarantulas as “attaining the size of a half-grown mouse, possessing fangs the size of a rattlesnake’s, and delivering a bite generally considered fatal.” Yeesh.

Is this the gruesome truth or just arachnophobia? Let’s find out!

Join us for a nature walk through Mitchell Canyon and we will dispel any malicious rumors you might have heard about Mount Diablo’s misunderstood arachnids. You can even meet a tarantula named Curly, the real-life friend (not just Facebook friend) of the hike leader.

Be sure to bring a mask, plenty of water and a snack, and dress in layers. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Heavy rain cancels.

Restrooms are available at the parking lot.

Participants will be required to accept our COVID-19 Protocol (available during registration).

***There will be a $6 park entrance fee
