Meet Tan
How long have you lived in the Bay Area?
I split my time between Philadelphia and California, but every time I come back to the Bay Area I feel like I’m coming home. There’s something about Mount Diablo’s beauty, the trails, and the community that makes it easy to feel connected.
How did you learn about Save Mount Diablo?
My best friend works for Save Mount Diablo, and through them I was introduced to the incredible work this organization does. Once I learned about the mission—protecting and preserving these lands for future generations—I knew I had to get involved.
My first volunteer experience was at the Beacon lighting event. I was completely inspired by the passion and dedication of the staff and the other volunteers I met.
After that, I signed up for Moonlight on the Mountain last year and worked three full days—it was absolutely gorgeous and such a huge, coordinated production.
I love a good challenge, and Save Mount Diablo’s events are both joyful and meaningful, and surrounded by all the beauty that keeps me coming back.
Which Save Mount Diablo programs are you involved in?
So far, I’ve helped with the Beacon lighting, Moonlight on the Mountain, and some behind-the-scenes preparation for events this year—including assembling equipment and helping out wherever I can in the lead-up.
What do you enjoy about the volunteer work you do?
I love that volunteering lets me be part of something bigger than myself.
It’s not just about showing up for an event—it’s about protecting land, connecting with nature, and working alongside other passionate people. There’s a wonderful sense of camaraderie that makes even the hard work feel joyful.
What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?
There are so many aspects to Moonlight on the Mountain and it’s hard to choose one project, because I’m always game for a challenge!
Driving a big truck to pick up the wine from Wente and deliver it to the office was super interesting. Also, helping assemble the wagon for this year’s Moonlight event in the prep week, which let me put something together—even when we weren’t sure if all the pieces were included!
Is there a memorable experience you’ve had as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?
Moonlight on the Mountain last year was absolutely unforgettable. Seeing Mount Diablo at sunset, surrounded by music, community, and celebration, made all the work leading up to the event worth it.
There was this moment when everything was set up, the lights were glowing, and people were arriving—I just stood there and took in the beauty of the range and marveled at the lands we are helping to conserve.
How do you spend your time beyond your volunteer work with us?
I’m a creative entrepreneur who runs a branding and design agency focused on mission-driven organizations. I love bringing ideas to life, whether through design, writing, or building community.
Volunteering with Save Mount Diablo feels like a natural extension of that—it’s about using my time and energy to create something meaningful.
