Volunteer of the Month | Maureen McSweeney

Maureen McSweeney

Meet Maureen

What does Maureen enjoy about the volunteer work she does?

Maureen loves the community that comes out and comes together for Discover Diablo and Mangini Ranch group outings.

There is a lot of local and intergenerational knowledge that is shared and appreciated on these outings with lovely groups of people from all backgrounds and outdoor experience levels.

What is the most challenging project she’s worked on as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

She hasn’t encountered any massive challenges, as Save Mount Diablo has such a collaborative culture! Challenges are usually it just being too hot or folks having allergies. Basically, looking out for people’s well-being and safety out in nature.

Is there a memorable experience she’s had as a Save Mount Diablo volunteer?

One time Maureen was a docent for a middle school group at Mangini Ranch. Many students were hesitant to be out there at first, some having never hiked, though by the end they were so excited to be out on the trails exploring.

Another memorable experience was sweeping (hiking at the end of the group and watching out for folks) for a tarantula hike with Ken Lavin. It was a great group of people, and everyone was in awe of the tarantulas and glow-in-the-dark scorpions on the trail.

How does she spend her time beyond her volunteer work with us?

Traveling, playing guitar, and spending time with friends and family. She is also starting a fellowship with White Pony Express, a food rescue group in Contra Costa County, in the fall.

How long has she lived in the Bay Area?

Maureen has lived in the Bay Area, Concord specifically, her entire life.

How did she learn about Save Mount Diablo?

UC Berkeley has this club, Cal Hiking and Outdoor Society (CHAOS Club). While Maureen was in college, one of the club officers mentioned they interned with Save Mount Diablo and suggested it as an opportunity for her to get involved in community engagement.

She connected with Juan Pablo, who provided her with informational packets on the Concord Naval Weapons Station Reuse project’s development plans at the time.

She distributed these and had conversations with community members about their desired outcome for the space.

When did she start volunteering with us and why did she get involved?

She started volunteering in 2022 after looking for engagement opportunities coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Which Save Mount Diablo programs is she involved in?

Maureen is a Discover Diablo hike sweep and docent at Mangini Ranch Educational Preserve.
